The Comparison Cage

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

I am sure you've heard the saying," comparison is the thief of joy," and it's true! The quickest way to steal your own progress, achievements, and joy is by comparing your life to someone else's. It's easy to get on social media every day and see people living the life you want effortless, and here you are feeling like you are so far away from achieving what they have.

The first thing is to understand, that everyone at some point in their life has been in the comparison cage. It's not something to be ashamed of.

Secondly, understand that your journey will not be the same as theirs; just like your wins won't pack the same power as theirs either. You may be on the journey to the same outcome, but the challenges, losses, wins, tears, and emotions will not be the same as the person you are comparing your life to.

Understand that no one is you and you are no one else but yourself! You can reach your goals as well as anyone else when you focus on yourself. Your life is worth the effort you are putting in to become a better version of yourself.

So, what can you do when you find yourself in the comparison cage?

  1. Give yourself more credit for your achievements! Big or small it all counts.

  2. Ask yourself, What is it that I am comparing myself to when I look at this person?

  3. Is this really true or just what I am telling myself?

  4. Are there things you see this person does well that you can implement into your life differently?

When you give yourself recognition for your own achievement's you give yourself the empowerment to proceed with your journey. Listen, no one can take away the work you put into better yourself. No one can take away your achievements and progress. The only person that can take away those things are you by comparing your journey to others.

If looking at the progress or success of others makes you feel envious, unworthy, or any negative emotion, you may need to find out what is triggering that negative emotion and address it.

I believe that we should be able to look at other people's wins and feel inspired! We should be able to find their strengths and see how we can maybe implement that into our own life. Take where we feel are our weak areas and build strength into them. Find out what is holding you back from being able to have the life you want, and take the necessary steps to fix this challenge.

Don't let the comparison cage keep you trapped! You can open the gate at any moment and set yourself free.
